The Reason this Democratic Party is Hiding its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

The decision by the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing regarding its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears stunning however entirely predictable. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a PR firm than an electoral entity committed to cultivating local power for winning elections.

An Environment That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to break with the prevailing attitude of conformity, the committee has stayed under that legacy throughout this past year. Making public an official autopsy might have shown whether party leaders truly desire to encourage honest conversation about the missteps that enabled Donald Trump to win re-election. However, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there are no lessons to be learned from the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the document.

Key Issues a Report Would Have Examined

A genuine analysis with any value would tackle head-on a series of difficult topics. These include:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • The Decision to Run: The determined choice by a party leader to seek re-election, coupled with a very late exit, is seen by some as robbing the party's base of a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: Amid rising costs, the campaign is criticized for accommodating powerful financial backers and not managing to confront the effects of corporate greed.
  • The Foreign Policy Effect: An unwillingness to adjust an approach on a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating many voters, especially with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Young Voter Support: Research demonstrates a huge decline of votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern Avoiding Accountability

This refusal aligns with a longstanding habit of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. This mirrors a dynamic where virtually every Democratic officeholder in Congress supported a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term right up until a disastrous public debate performance forced a change.

Meanwhile, large majorities within the party's base were continually telling pollsters of their opposition to the incumbent to be the nominee.

Financial Concerns

An honest report would also probe issues regarding campaign spending, such as what sums went to high-priced advisors and media firms over the course of a campaign that managed to spend an enormous sum during the general election.

A Underlying Problem

Ultimately, the suppression surrounding this report highlights an allegiance to the established hierarchy who engineered an unsuccessful electoral effort. The signal to the party's base – which includes countless small donors – is that they cannot have a right to know the lessons party chiefs say they discovered from hundreds of interviews based on extensive interviews.

A party unwilling to honestly assess where it went wrong is unlikely to climb out of the rut that proved so helpful to the winning candidate.
